Harga Minyak Malaysia

March 26, 2008

Asslamualaikum,

As you guys know, the price of petroleum in Malaysia is controlled by the government. At USD 100 per barrel, the cost of the subsidy for petroleum reaches as much as RM 40 billion if i am not mistaken. This method of subsidy is actually, not very effective. People smuggle these control products through the borders for profound profit. (For those that are ridiculously irresponsible).

I am not sure about what others think. These are some thoughts from me in my oppinion:

1. Malaysia produces petroleum. The price of petroleum products in Malaysia, then should not be affected by the international price except for the exported ones. At least, currently.

2. The price of petroleum products in Malaysia should NOT be subsidized. This will of course increase the cost of living of Malaysian absurdly. However, the government has saved more than RM 40 Billion. This can then be used to increase the salary of the government workers. How about private companies? They need to increase their workers’ salaries too. So, cost of operation will increase tremendously. Price quotation for contracts then will need to increase, too. And with the RM40 billion. Probably, that will be enough for the government to handle that. Somebody else who can do the math. I’m not eager enough to do it. Cost of living will increase, no doubt about it.

But remember, the payroll should have some significant increment with it. This IMO is better than price control which later is abused by some people.

3. For people who do not earn anything. This will be hard pressing for them. Those, who can actually work, should do so and earn something. For those who can’t, they are the unfortunate and should be helped by those who are fortunate.

Distributive justice.

Another positive consequences of this is:

Imported products which are not affected by the increasing overhead cost except for just a little caused by  distribution and stuff will seem cheaper.

Okay, now the reality. I thought about this in like some free time and as i am not an economist or anything as such, I would love to know the bad consequences of this. Please, let me know. It seems ridiculous but i did think about it and i need some feedback. Please feel free to comment. Please.

    Saudara,

Similarly, I have been thinking about this in my free time. Each and every time I have concluded that this fuel subsidy is not a sustainable model. I have calculated that if we take the total population of Malaysia at 30 million, the subsidy is just about RM1300 per person.

However, let’s assume that 60% of the population are reporting their income to LHDN. That will be 18 million people. Now we have about RM2200 per person. Use that as a direct rebate for income tax in lieu of fuel subsidy. Perhaps use only RM2000 with the balance of RM200 to be used to help the less fortunate.

For those who does not have to pay income tax (lower income bracket) the money will be paid the subsidy directly into their account. For those who has to pay, say, RM1000 income tax, they will get a refund of RM1000. For those with a higher income tax, just deduct that RM2000 from what they need to pay.

This will have a 3 parallel effect. People will start to declare their income to LHDN. More people will start to work or start a business. And the most important thing is the subsidy will go to the intended target. As a spinoff, as more people are working and starting business, the domestic economy will grow. A strong domestic economy will help to shield us from the volatility of the international economy.

Then again, I’m not an economist nor am I a policy maker.

As an oil producing nation, Malaysia should subsidize its agro industrial complex, rather than giving its citizens rebates/subsidies. By lowering the cost of production and logistics, ergo the cost of goods will come down. That is the China model. This then increases Malaysia’s trade muscle.

The benefits of this model does only benefit the commercial sector.but its citizens as well. Cost of living goes down, purchasing power is up, what you have here can be an export led economy; and consumer driven economic upsurge. You get the cake and eat it too, so to speak.

    err… one more thing

total registered vehicles in 2006 = 15,790,732 units
    total registered motorcycle in 2006 = 6,164,958 units subsidy for 250cc maximum = RM150
    subsidy for 2000cc to 2500cc vehicle = RM625
previous total subsidies = RM53 billion

    simple calculation:

    16,000,000 units x RM625 = RM10,000,000,000
    7,000,000 units x RM150 = RM1,050,000,000
    total goverment subsidy=RM10 billion+RM1.05 billion= RM11.05billion

COMMENT: goverment save a lot compared to the previous figures RM53 billion of previous budget
